About Us

Our Mission Statement

The mission and purpose of AHCA Afghan Hound National Rescue:

  1. Provide for and promote the welfare, protection and humane treatment of Afghan hounds.

  2. Encourage responsible owners to retain their hounds rather than give them up, and offer advice, training and support to attain that end whenever possible.

  3. Assist Afghan hound owners who must give up their Hounds in returning them to the responsible breeder or finding suitable new homes when possible.

  4. Provide rescue assistance to Afghan hounds given up by their owners, found stray, in distress, or in animal shelters.

  5. Return strays to the owners or breeders if they can be found and are willing and able to take them back.

  6. Find good homes for the remainder where they may live out their lives as pets.

  7. Educate people about Afghan hounds, their unique qualities and their proper care.

  8. Provide mutual physical, mental and emotional support to all Afghan hound rescuers.

Adopting an Afghan Hound Through AHCA Rescue

Our process is a bit detailed, but there is a point to it.  Our objective is to place the right Orphan Afghan Hound in the right home. To achieve this end, we ask that, if you are interested in adopting, please fill out our Adoption Application. print a copy and fill it out.  Answer all questions candidly, or mark them N/A if they do not apply to your circumstances.  Do not alter the application. You can download the application by clicking on this PDF Application icon.

We recommend that you read our Adoption Agreement as well, before completing the application.

Send the application to the rescuer who has an Afghan Hound you are interested in, or send it to AffieRescue@aol.com with an email describing the type of Affie you are looking for.  We will work with the rescuers closest to you and arrange for a visit to your home to discuss available Affies and get a “sense” of your home environment.  Again, our objective is to make the best match possible between you and your future Afghan Hound.  We may not have the right Affie for you at that point in time (children, fences, cats and other dogs are some of the many factors we must consider) and it may take a while to make a match, but be patient.  And bear in mind that many of our rescuers prefer to place their Af’s within reasonable driving range of their geographic location.

If you have any questions, please contact us: email us at AffieRescue@aol.com, or call on our toll free line 877-AF-RESCU (877-237-3728)

Gallery of Rescued Affies

Moonshadow, formerly Rufus, was an owner surrender to AHCA Rescue. He was in foster for one year before coming to his new forever home two years ago at age 8. He lives with another rescue Afghan Hound and a rescue dog. He is the most well behaved dog and exceptionally friendly to people and dogs on his walks. Everyone says he is beautiful. He enjoys walks and loves playing with squeaker toys like a puppy. He was featured in a rock music video, and does video reviews of dog products on YouTube. He is the alarm clock for the house and makes sure to have breakfast bright and early at 5am every morning. He is a K-9 member of the Minneapolis Neighborhood Block Patrol, walking on his route regularly.

Another Happy Ending!  One of the three pups Afghan Hound Club of America Rescue got from the Carolinas is snuggled in his new home tonight.  Sweet Dreams, Lotus.  Here’s wishing you and your new family have many happy years together!
